BLACK JESUS MOVIE

Was Jesus Black?
A new film answers yes
October 30, 2006 -- The first film to depict Jesus as a black man and that suggests race was a factor in his crucifixion recently hit theaters.
In addition to its theatrical release, Color of the Cross , which opened Friday, scored a distribution deal with Rocky Mountain Pictures that some say could bring in tens of millions of dollars over the next several years.
Filmmaker Jean Claude La Marre credits his inspiration, in part, to Mel Gibson’s wildly successful Passion of the Christ, which grossed an estimated $370 million, fueled by a Christian market that has been largely ignored.

La Marre hopes the film, opening in limited-release in 18 markets in October and nationwide on Nov. 10, will strike a chord with African Americans, many of whom believe Jesus was, if not black, a dark man with kinky hair as opposed to a fair-haired, white man in Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper.” The King James Bible suggests Christ had “hair of his head like the pure wool.”

“This is a film that, I think, will do some social good, in terms of lending some psychological healing that black people so desperately need,” La Marre says. “This is the most positive portrayal of a black person on screen … to have a black man playing Jesus is so powerful, it will resonate.”

La Marre stars in the film as Jesus. Co-stars include movie and soap opera actress Debbi Morgan as Mary and Ananda Lewis of BET and MTV fame as Leah. La Marre’s previous projects include 2003’s Gang of Roses co-starring rapper Lil’ Kim and Stacey Dash; 2004’s Nora’s Hair Salon starring Jenifer Lewis and Bobby Brown; and 2005’s Brothers In Arms which co-starred David Carradine, former Miss USA Kenya Moore, and rapper Kurupt.
