MICHAEL JACKSON is ALIVE

“Michael”  only  sold 224,000 copies, on the other hand, “Michael” was the highest debut album of the week according to hitsdailydouble.com. It outsold new CDs by R. Kelly and P Diddy by more than 100,000 copies. Around the world, however, Sony says it’s an international hit. (See further below.)
However, Jackson’s last album, “Invincible,” sold 363,000 copies in its first week, back on October 30, 2001.
Given the modest amount of money that went into marketing “Michael” and the huge sums wasted on P Diddy, you could say “Michael” is even a bigger hit.
What it lacks, though, is a break out hit. And the album still has not overcome the stigma of Jackson’s vocals possibly not being his–and they are.
Sony sort of screwed this up from the beginning. The version of “Breaking News” that was put on the website for streaming in November didn’t sound like Michael Jackson. It was in fact the wrong mix. This led the rabid Jackson fans to scream that they were being fooled.
It’s too bad: “Breaking News” is a great single. On the album, it’s clearly Michael Jackson singing all the way through the lead. Jackson fans are denying themselves a real treat if they think otherwise.
The real first single, “Hold My Hand,” with Akon, has not been a crowd pleaser.
Hindsight is always 20/20, but I do think Sony rushed the release. They had no marketing campaign, no focus, and a lot of negativity to overcome. If they’d waited til spring, some more thought could have gone into how to launch this CD.
“Michael” has plenty of potential singles. “Monster,” “Keep Your Head Up,” and “Another Day” are all great. But Sony’s going to have to implement some out of the box thinking to make them happen.
Around the world, “Michael” is a different story. Here’s a press release from Sony:
# MICHAEL shipped Platinum in 14 territories including the United States, UK, Germany, France (2x), Italy (3x), Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belgium, Czech Republic (4x), Canada, Korea and the Middle East.
# The album debuted at #1 in Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden.
# And on top of the # 1 album chart entry in Germany, sales of MICHAEL broke the country’s 2010’s first-week record with over 85,000 units sold.
# Opening week sales of more than 113,000 in the U.K. scored the biggest opening week for a new Michael Jackson studio album since ‘Dangerous’ nearly 20 years ago.
# In Japan, the album is the fourth Michael Jackson album to ever debut in the top 3, joining Bad, Thriller and last year’s “This Is It” companion album.
# The album is in the top five in Belgium (#2), US (#3), Japan (#3), the UK (#4), France (#4), Denmark (#4). In the US, the album shipped platinum and debuted at #3 of the Billboard Album chart with just under 230,000 copies sold.
# The album went Gold in 17 territories on arrival in Japan, China, Australia, Ireland, Austria, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand, India, Philippines and Taiwan.

WEEK IN MUSIC-NOVEMBER 25th-Kanye and MInaj over Forecasts

Kanye’s Latest to Debut #1, Nicki Minaj #2, as Black Friday Looms

November 24, 2010

Kanye West’s Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy just got a lot brighter.

The Roc-A-Fella/IDJ renaissance hip-hop icon and awards show provocateur lives up to his own lofty ambitions with a chart-topping debut for his latest rap opus, on target for between 525-575k, surpassing all pre-release forecasts. That tops the total registered by808s and Heartbreak, which bowed on almost the same week last year with 450k.

Those figures are based on those intrepid music retailers not being full body-scanned at our nation’s airports by the frisky TSA.

Cash Money/Universal Motown’s red-hot Nicki Minajalso bested pre-release predictions, with a total in the 375-425k range for her hotly anticipated debut, Pink Friday, though the upcoming Black Friday could render these estimates a little less accurate than usual.

Reprise emo-rock standard bearers My Chemical Romance’s fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, their first since 2006’s The Black Parade, is on target for between 125-150k.

Def Jam/IDJ R&B songwriter/producer Ne-Yo’s fourth album, Libra Scale, should do in the 115-140k range.

Kemosabe/RCA/RMG pop diva Ke$ha’s Cannibal EP, available separately and as part of a deluxe package with her debut Animal album, should do between 60-70k on its own.

Lloyd Banks’ H.F.M. 2 (The Hunger for More 2), his first album for G-Unit under a deal with EMI Label Services, is off to a Top 10 start at iTunes, and should do between 40-50k in sales.

RCA/RMG’s Burlesque soundtrack to the film co-starringCher and Christina Aguilera, could do anywhere between 25-50k, depending on how the film, which opens today, fares at the box office.

Rounding out the new releases are Jay-Z’s Hits album (25-30k), Arista Nashville’s Alan Jackson (20-25k) andNine Inch Nails’ self-released Pretty Hate Machinereissue on their own Null label (17-20k).

Also, look for Justin Bieber's acoustic album, an exclusive at Wal-Mart and Sam's, to hit the street on Friday, and should be well-represented on the chart next week.

The market was up 29% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and still down 13% year to date. You may now go back to picking up the pieces of sky that are falling down.

After months of speculation, Mariah Carey has finally confirmed that she is pregnant.
In a new, exclusive interview with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush from inside the couple’s Manhattan home, Mariah and Nick confirmed they are expecting their first child together.
As part of a 3-part interview starting tonight on “Access Hollywood,” Mariah and husband Nick Cannon will discuss the whole pregnancy with Billy. The interview was taped a few days ago. She told Billy, “…you’re the first person I’ve told. I mean I didn’t tell anyone at all. But YES, we’re pregnant. It’s true.”
“It’s been tough because I’ve been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy and it’s not easy,” Mimi said.
Nick added “The greatest gift on earth is a child. The process of getting here was hard.”

El Debarge has a second chance

El DeBarge was more than a little nervous before his big comeback performance at the BET Awards this summer.
"It had been so long since I performed, and I knew coming out of prison, that wasn't the best reputation one could ask for, so I didn't know if people would still like me or if they were going to give me a second chance, but they did," DeBarge said.
That's for sure. The audience stood and cheered as he ran though solo hits and chart toppers from DeBarge the group.
He still had it. How did DeBarge keep it after 20 years away from the business?
"The abuse you can do to your whole body with drugs, it can be a terrible thing, so for me to have my chops and my three-octave vocal range, that's just the grace of God," DeBarge said. "He's all about love and second chances."
DeBarge, 49, was the frontman for the Detroit-area group DeBarge, which included four of his siblings, in the '80s.
DeBarge's hits -- including "I Like It," "All This Love," "Time Will Reveal," "Who's Holding Donna Now" and the Latin-tinged "Rhythm of the Night" -- framed the group's buoyant harmonies with melodic R&B riffs.
El DeBarge began his solo career in 1986, and his hits included "Who's Johnny" and "Love Always," but like several of his siblings, he fell into a downward spiral of drug abuse that culminated with a two-year prison term in 2008.
Once he was released, things fell quickly into place. DeBarge signed a deal with Interscope Records to record an album, "Second Chance."
Production luminaries such as Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, along with new blood like Mike City, the Avila Brothers and Michael Angelos, are onboard. The work is to be released later in the fall.
"The message I'm bringing to this album is a message of love and joy and second chances. I've been given a second chance to bring love to the world again," DeBarge said.
